MORRIS and Betty Pollock describe their home of the past 13 months as a "premium resort" that enables them to retain their privacy while taking advantage of a huge array of facilities and services.

The two, 88 and 78 respectively, live in the Village Glen, a cluster-style retirement village set on more than 40 hectares in Rosebud. They moved to the Glen after they became disillusioned with their previous retirement village, which was "more interested in their profits that they were in the residents", Mr Pollock says.

But now they couldn't be happier. Mr Pollock, a keen furniture-maker, uses the village workshop to make toys and other items; they use the clubhouse for the pool and the athletic facilities and often have lunch there as well.

There's a nine-hole golf course, walking tracks, a sports pavilion and a packed calendar of events that includes weekly movies, tai chi and strength-building exercises. There is a hair salon, library and an area set aside for vegetable gardens.

"We have a nurse on constant attention. All you have to do is press the button and she's here," Mr Pollock says.

The couple pay a monthly service fee of about $300 that includes staff and facility costs, rates and utilities and say they are very pleased with the quality of life that provides.

"You can spend your life here without ever leaving the village, if that's what you want," Mr Pollock says. -- KATE ROBERTSON
